New to Town

Welcome to Walnut! We are pleased to have you join our community. Here is some information to help you get acquainted with our community.

We have one public park on the north side of Walnut, with a shelter, picnic and playground areas, and a splash pad; there are also three (3) baseball/softball diamonds. Located on the south side of Walnut is another shelter and a 1/2 mile walking path around our Wetlands Project area.

Walnut has several dining choices including Glenn's Food & Pub, Emma Jean's; McDonald's, and Kum & Go Pizza.  We also have a bakery that serves a fantastic lunch menu, Roberts Bakery Treats & Treasures.

We are host to five (5) churches, Calvary Baptist Church, First Presbyterian Church, Our Savior Lutheran Church, Peace United Church of Christ and St. Patrick's Catholic Church. We also have multiple antique shops in our downtown area, which is showcased by our original brick streets.

Several events are held in Walnut throughout the year. The last weekend in March is host to the annual Dale Lynch Alumni Weekend. In June, every Father's Day weekend, the AmVets hold their annual Walnut Antique Show. Also in June and again in October we have City-wide garage sales. The first Sunday in August is host to the annual Optimists Antique City Car Show, and the Antique Fall Festival is held annually in September.  Finally, over Thanksgiving weekend, is the annual Christmas Walk, with visits from Santa.

The Walnut Public Library is located across the street and just south of City Hall, at 224 Antique City Drive. The phone number is 712-784-3533. Library hours are Monday, Tuesday, Thursday & Friday 1:00 - 5:00 p.m., Wednesday 1:00 - 6:00 p.m. and Saturday 9:00 a.m. to Noon. Also located in the back of the library is the Walnut Genealogy room.

The City of Walnut is operated under the Mayor-Council form of government. The Council consists of five (5) elected Council members at large for staggered terms of four years. The Mayor is elected for a term of two years.

The City Council meets the first Thursday of each month at 5:00 p.m. in City Hall. All meeting are open to the public and are video taped. Council meetings are then replayed on local cable Channel 12.
