Sanitation

Garbage Pick-Up: The City requires all residents to have garbage pick-up. The residential garbage fee of $12.00 is collected monthly with the water and sewer bill. R  & S Waste Disposal is the garbage hauler for residential trash.

Garbage should be out by 7:00 a.m. on Tuesday for all residents. All garbage is to be placed at the alley line for collection.  In those instances where an alley is not available, trash should be left at the curb for collection.

Containers must be maintained in good order and repair, be rodent-proof with a tight cover.  Containers should be sufficiently strong to prevent spillage and wind-carry.  Heavy-duty disposable garbage bags are not to be more than 35 gallons in capacity and shall be leakproof and waterproof.  The total weight of any container and contents shall not exceed 75 pounds.  Containers placed at the curb line are not to be placed more than 12 hours in advance of the regularly scheduled collection day and are to be promptly removed from the curb line following collection.  No more than 6 bags per household will be picked up.  The garbage collector is not required to pick up trash that is not properly bagged or bundled.  It is your responsibility to pick up any trash that is lying loose on the ground.

Oversized items such as appliances and furniture are not permitted for normal collection.  Arrangements may be made directly with R & S Waste Disposal at 712-748-3471 for collection of oversized items.  R & S Waste Disposal will charge a fee for this service.

Tires, hazardous liquids, and yard waste materials are banned from landfills and cannot be mixed and collected with normal trash.

General Garbage Pick-Up:  The City of Walnut sponsors a general garbage collection event in both the spring and the fall of each year when oversized items are collected free-of-charge.  General garbage pick-up is intended for residential customers only.  Businesses are not allowed to participate in the general garbage pick-up program.

Rules for the general pick-up must be strictly adhered to in order for garbage to be removed.  Garbage will not be picked up if the rules are violated.  Please pay particular attention to the rules when preparing for general pick-up.  All lumber is to be cut in four-foot lengths and bundled in order to be collected.  No lumber will be accepted that is over four feet long.

Appliances, including microwaves, water heaters, washers, dryers, stoves, dehumidifiers, refrigerators, freezers, and air conditioners can be included and will be collected during general pick-up for a fee of $15.00 per appliance.  Mattresses will also be picked up for a fee of $10 each. The fees will be billed by the City on an individual basis.  All shelves and drawers must be removed from refrigerators and freezers.

The following items will not be accepted in conjunction with general pick-up:

  •  Yard or garden waste
  •  Car batteries
  •  Propane cylinders
  •  Gas tanks or gas cans - either plastic or metal
  •  Waste oil
  •  Tires
  •  Pieces of cement
  •  Bed springs, fencing, or wire of any kind

Everything involved with general pick-up must be tied, bundled, bagged, or boxed in order for it to be picked up.  Please do not abuse this service.  Excessive amounts of waste may not be collected or an additional fee may be charged.

Recycling: Recyclables are to be set at the curb by 7:00 a.m. on Friday for all residents. To see how to separate your recyclables and what R & S Waste Disposal will and will not pick-up, please click on the Recycling Rules tab at the left of this page.

Collection on Holidays:  There is no collection of garbage or recycling on holidays.  When a holiday falls on or before the regular Tuesday pick-up, the schedule will be adjusted to Wednesday pick-up.  Notification of changes in collection dates will be printed on utility bills, published in the City newsletter, and included on the calendar of events on the City's website.

Yard Waste: The City has a tree dump and a yard and garden waste compost site. Residents may take all trees, branches and shrubbery to the tree dump and grass clippings, garden waste and leaves to the compost site at no charge. Any plastic bags should be put in the garbage or taken back with you. No concrete is allowed to be dumped at this site.

Open Burning: Open burning of landscape waste (grass clippings, leaves, garden waste, brush & trees) originating on the premises is permitted, unless the County or State has issued a burn ban. Burning must NOT be done on sidewalks, paved or seal-coated streets or in alleys.
