Walnut, Iowa is the hometown of fallen Omaha police officer Kerrie Holtz Orozco, who was killed in the line of duty in May of 2015.
A volunteer committee, headed by Erica Stamp and Julie Nash, spent many hours planning an event that was held in her honor on September 19, 2015, which would have been Kerrie's 30th birthday.
Kerrie on 4 Kids was held in conjunction with the annual 5K Fun Run/Walk in Walnut, where Orozco grew up. The activities included a free-will donation lunch, a slow-pitch softball tournament, kids games, music, and a beer garden. 2015 was the third year for the Walnut 5K Fun Run. Each time organizers have used the proceeds to help someone in need. Because of Kerrie's connection to Walnut, it seemed appropriate to hold the 2015 event in her honor.
The Pottawattamie County Community Foundation awarded the project a $5,000 neighborhood strengthening grant. Proceeds from the event went toward a southwest Iowa Shop with a Cop program and a scholarship in Orozco's name.
