The Walnut Mural Project has renewed the historical spirit in our town, and we hope this peek into our past inspires you as well. Twenty-seven artists used their imagination and creativity to develop murals and signs, enhancing the ambiance of " Iowa's Antique City".
While visiting, make it your project to find them all and find the letter on each one, spelling WALNUT. This can be a fun family adventure!

A group of professional artists and muralists, the Letterheads, painted murals in Walnut in May of 2001. The City received a grant from the Iowa West Foundation. The Iowa West grant funding and funding through the City enabled the group of artists to paint murals throughout the community, especially in the downtown Business District. The murals will take you back to an era of fascination with new ideas and opportunities. Strolling through the community, you will find yourself taking a step back in time, recalling nostalgic memories of the past. Some murals have direct ties to the Walnut area, while others show popular icons of the early 1900's. One mural includes a car that was designed here while another portrays the stagecoach that ran just outside of town. The Walnut Museum can tell you more!
Walnut received two state-side honors for the project -- Iowa Community Betterment's "Pioneer Hybrid International" and the "Community Award in the Arts" presented at the 2002 Iowa Arts Council Awards.
